I give candid and honest opinions on Winnipeg’s restaurants, but importantly, I give fair opinions. In my previous review on Café 22 back in February, 2010, I reported that I liked the atmosphere, enjoyed the food but felt like the restaurant was a side business to the pizza delivery business. The Café 22 proprietor commented that they made improvements to their St. Boniface location and invited me back for another try—and I’m happy to oblige.
Today’s visit finds me in the cozy and comfy lounge chairs, with a beautiful view of the Esplanade Riel and the Winnipeg downtown skyline. Moments after I seated myself, a cheery server follows with menus and a smile. The selection of wine is still limited but the house wine is Cono Sur, cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay; you can do a lot worse than these. The menu only lists a few beers but the cooler has several that don’t appear on the list. You shouldn’t have much trouble finding something you like.
I often have the Big Slice of pizza because it’s a ridiculously good bargain. Not to be a one trick pony, this time I try the calzone, which is a 10-inch pizza dough, doubled over with all the pizza goop inside. The server comically describes it as a kicked-up pizza pop, but much better than a pizza pop. The $8 calzone includes all the toppings you want, and Café 22 offers a generous selection of toppings. I choose a combination of seven toppings and I’m amazed that they manage to cram a bit of each into the dough pocket. This is a very good meal and I can envision a lot of people enjoying this concoction. Personally, I’m a more goop, less dough person and I found the calzone to have a little too much dough and not enough room for goop for my likings—but this is a preference thing, and not a jab at the quality of the food. The quality is superb.
The cooler has a chocolate cake and a cheese cake, but no one seems to pay much attention to either. The gelati cooler demands all the attention as a continuous stream of customers file in for a sample of their numerous flavours. Most of the customers leave with comments of “delicious” and “spectacular.” Unfortunately, I cannot confirm nor dispel their comments as I have little room left for dessert. Dozens of gelati aficionados can’t all be wrong so I’m going to believe that there’s something to the gelati.
I thank Café 22 for inviting me to another stab at their St. Boniface location. They treated me to good food, pleasant atmosphere and excellent service at a very reasonable price. What more can you ask?
