Kenora Area Restaurants – Revisited

A while back, I wrote some reviews on Kenora and area restaurants, since Winnipeg’s residents love to travel to lake country for leisure. In my review, I mentioned that Kenora’s residents have a hatred for Winnipeg visitors, and that they are largely prejudice against us. As you can imagine, Kenora Officials took exception to these comments and responded that Kenora welcomes tourism from Winnipeg, embracing all visitors. Kenora’s Officials invited me to revisit their city and, as with any restaurant that raises concerns with my reviews, I happily accepted their offer.

Our lunch outing brings us to the Cornerstone, which sits in the heart of downtown, adjacent to the lake shore. Alas, this establishment, despite its proximity to the pier, provides no sightline to the water. Pity. Otherwise, the cozy atmosphere provides a rustic, cabin-like setting. The soaring ceilings and un-partitioned dining room gives diners an unobstructed view of the entire dining room. We’re told that this openness conduces well to the weekly performances that play in the corner recessed area, doubling as an impromptu stage.

Cornerstone offers a few interesting selections but largely, the menu consists of the usual pub-grub sort of options. The ubiquitous burgers might tweak your antennae as a little steep, but the sheer mass of the offering makes this well worth your buck. My burger comes completely smothered with the fixings; add the monstrous patty and this meal will satisfy all but the wildest of appetites. This perfectly grilled burger tastes as good as any I tasted before.

The simple steak sandwich looks plain and unspectacular; however, the meat comes perfectly prepared and the tender meat oozes with beef flavour. A generous helping of mushrooms finish this dish. Sometimes the simplest meals are the best and this is one simply superb selection.

The generous helping of bruschetta comes colourful and fresh. The herbs tastes like Cornerstone plucked them straight out of the garden and plopped them onto my plate, and the tomatoes taste like they just came off the vine. Every bite of this delicious bruschetta gives a fresh burst of veggie-goodness onto your taste buds.

Our friendly and efficient server brings our food in a timely and professional manner. Will she still act so cordially if she realises that we come from Winnipeg? Pretending to be a traveller from the East, I ask her some candid questions about what she thinks of Winnipeg and if she recommends that we visit. The server quickly responds that Winnipeg is a metropolitan city that offers some interesting and recommended restaurants. She helpfully points out a number of places that we must-visit and describes the area. I have no doubt she earnestly promotes Winnipeg with our best interest in mind.

Okay, so one person with a positive attitude about Winnipeg cannot possibly represent the city’s perspective, just as a few negative experiences cannot be expanded to cover a civic mindset. Some people will naturally like Winnipeg, and some will not. Out of this experience, I glean a couple of certainties:

1. Kenora is a beautiful and fun place to visit.
2. The Cornerstone is a wonderful place to have a meal (I look forward to the entertainment in future).
