If you know
Kenora at all, you probably know its most prominent landmark, the Best Western
Inn. Sitting on the lakeside, this
building is not only attractive, it also provides some of the best views of the
city and surrounding area.
Sitting
atop the hotel, the Waterside Restaurant gives this view to diners without
having to stay at the hotel. Often,
restaurants with great views, especially hotel restaurants, give me the heebie
jeebies. They don’t need to serve good
food as the view alone will draw people through its doors (think of the Royal
Crown and Salisbury House on the Bridge).
Fortunately, that’s not the case here.
I’ve dined
at the Waterside numerous times and each time, I received exemplary service
coupled with good food. The menu is a
bit limited and most of the options are continental, which fits with the simple
yet classy ambiance.
Waterside
grills their steaks to perfection, seared on the outside and bright pink on the
inside. Similarly, the prime rib comes
exactly as ordered but the defined carnivore might find the portions a little
conservative. The meat tastes tender and juicy, and leaves you wanting more.
The walleye (pickerel) also tastes juicy, and the light battering ensures that
the flavour of the delicate fish doesn’t get lost in the coating or the oil. The fish and chips comes with haddock, instead
of the ubiquitous walleye, which tastes firm yet flakey. The accompanying fries are a tad greasy but
they’re nicely seasoned. The coleslaw
tastes considerably sweeter than what you expect, which works well since I
can’t help gobbling it up.
The Waterside
is also a participant in the Winter Bites food
festival. Unfortunately, the festival
menu is not available for lunch. The
Kenora Etoufee looks absolutely divine and I hope that they keep it on the menu
for a future visit.
This is
