Wild Wing hides in strip mall hell, buried among congestion corner around the Lagimodiere / Regent / Nairn intersection. The unassuming façade leads into a rustic dining room, loaded with sports TVs and hard wooden chairs. This place doesn’t pretend to be more than what it is: a guy’s hub. Although there’s a smattering of genders, I won’t be back here unless it’s a guys’ night out.
The highlight of the menu focuses on Wings 101, featuring more than 100 sauces and flavours for wings. I subscribe to the more-is-less philosophy where too many options overwhelms the senses and you lose interest. If you offer me a choice of 10 sauces, I will go over each one and consider what my interest wants today—if you offer me >100, I don’t bother reading any of them. Think about the last time you read all the entries on a Chinese menu that offers 200+ dishes.
Since I like hot, I went with the hottest sauce they have, Ring of Fire which rates a “6” on the Heat Meter, or “on fire.” Yup, it was on fire—I went through wads of paper towels as I sweat through the dish. The flavour’s nice and I like the sauce; unfortunately, they cooked the wings to death. The meat tastes so dry I could literally bounce the wing off the table and have it bounce like a superball. I really do not like to waste food but I could not finish these rubber lumps.
The Fish & Chips includes a breaded, fried haddock fillet. The golden colour looks nice but the fish looks completely even and flat, like someone pressed it with an iron. Food isn’t supposed to look this symmetrical, unless you buy Pringles, in which you expect mechanical feed. The breading has a nice crunch but the meat tastes compacted and not flakey (further supporting my theory of having irons in the kitchen).
The chips (or fries) taste nicely cooked, although a little on the salty side. Soft and tender on the inside, they’re perfect for sopping up gravy if you want to upgrade to poutine. The gravy has great flavour, although I would like to see more of it, enough to cover the entire spread. There’s plenty of cheese curds, making this a fine entry.
Wild Wing is a fine place to come and watch a game with your buddies. After a few pitchers, you probably don’t care what the food tastes like. If you’re looking for a culinary experience, I can look out the window and see at least a dozen other restaurants I’d rather visit.
