Montana's has always been a fun place to eat, and a good place to bring the kids.  Each table sits covered with paper and crayons for your doodling pleasure.  It always takes a while for the food to arrive so we often play hangperson on the table.

When the food finally arrives, it's sad to say that the highlight might have been the doodling.  Specialising as a meat joint, I expect great things from the carnivorous options.  The ribs taste tender as advertised but there isn't a lot of flavour to them.  Montana's purports to smoke them for three hours but I barely get a hint of smoke and the hint that I get tastes more like liquid smoke than wood smoke.  As a smoking professional, I would leave my ribs in the smoker for at least four hours, and up to six hours so Montana's three hours may sound impressive to the novice but it sounds inadequate to me.

The Honkin' Beef Rib is indeed honkin' in size but lacking in tenderness and flavour.  Again, I can taste the searing flavour on the rib but there is a serious absence of smoke.  In addition, the meat tastes liver-dry and hard to swallow.  I love beef ribs but I can't finish this version.

Montana does a better job on the steaks, as they come cooked as ordered.  The meat tastes moist and juicy, with nice grilling on the surface.  The fried onions act as a nice accompaniment, as well as the beans and the coleslaw.  The ordinary fries are adequate but skip the bland and flavourless gravy.

Although Montana is a meat joint, they serve other options as well.  Called "meat of the sea," surprisingly the fish is the best catch of the day.  The monstrous portions have nice, crispy battering and moist, rich meat.  The batter is a bit greasy but not excessively so.  The pre-fab tartar sauce doesn't add much but the fish tastes rich enough without it.

Montana's may be a fun place to watch the game with the guys, or a good place to bring the kids to draw on the tables, but if you want good, Deep South smoked foods, this isn't the place.
