Pastrami & Things

Pastrami & Things
400 Tache Ave

I’m at the age now where I spend more time at hospitals because my parents’ generation is in its golden years.  As much as possible, I try to stay out of the hospital cafeterias since most of the foods need more help than the patients they’re supposed to feed.  Granted, there are times where you don’t want to get out of your slippers but if you’re willing or able to take a short hike, there’s often a gem nearby serving healthy food.

Pastrami & Things sits across the street from St Boniface Hospital on Tache Avenue.  Many hole-in-the-wall dives have small storefronts and sometimes they’re hard to find; you’ll definitely have a hard time spotting this site as there’s nary a sign that faces the street.  As soon as you enter the mini-mall, you can’t miss it but be sure you have the address down before coming.

If I come to a place called Pastrami & Things, the title compels me to try its namesake.  They offer a number of bread options but they pretty much force you to have your pastrami on rye.  The sandwich starts with a quarter pound of meat, augmented by your choice of sauces and vegetables.  Even though the sandwich is thick and heavy, it leaves me wanting for more.  I just cannot get enough of this delicious behemoth.  The tuna salad isn’t quite as thick as its meat cousin but it also leaves me wondering if I should order a second.

Coming off the deli board, you can also order a chicken filet sandwich, featuring a monstrous slice of breaded chicken breast.  This moist and delicious option is a far cry from the fast food, desiccated slop.   Whereas the other sandwiches wondering if I should cross the threshold from very full to groaning glutton but the chicken filet sandwich finished me off—just one is enough.

Oddly, they close at 4 pm, which means if you want dinner, you better come early.  They also don’t pre-make a ton so if they’re out , you’re out of luck as well.  As well, seating is very limited so I suggest coming in early or you’re having takeout.
