New in the theatre district, Peg Beer Co. offers patrons waiting for a show a great option to lull. Being a veteran Fringer, I spent many days sitting in foyer of the Warehouse Theatre, drinking lousy, overpriced beer, or even lousier overpriced coffee. I am so happy to walk the block to come to this wood-dominated building specialising in craft beers.
The beer board (a mounted television monitor) includes wide range of samples from across Canada, and one entry from Belgium. Prices are very reasonable, starting at $2 for a 5-ounce sample, $4 for a 10ounce glass, $6.50 for a pint and $8 for a 20-ounce mug, all with a nice discount during happy hour.
While waiting for the food to come, jackhammers and saws provide the entertainment. Soon, the product will rise as a patio to the side of the building. This area sits among a major gentrification (or better yet, just a modernisation) project so soon, the patio will be a great place to people-watch.
The beer and cheese soup tasted quite beery, just cheesy enough but a bit salty and not quite hot enough. The beer base has quite a bitter taste so if you’re not into hoppy, this might be a bit strong for you. Personally, I never thought beer and cheese complemented each other but if you’re a fan of the combo, this rendition should satisfy you.
I love the delicious sandwich. The beef comes very well marbled, moist and tender. The sourdough bread comes fresh, fresh fresh. The crust tastes crispy and the innards are so soft, they melted on touch. Normally that makes for a great bread but with this sandwich and sauce, I leave with gooey hands. The sauerkraut has a sweetish edge to it, which complements the saltiness of the meat perfectly. The crispiness of the cabbage adds a beautiful texture to the whole package.
On the snack menu, they offer a pumpkin seed snack with spicy mustard seasoning; out of seeds, they substitute with pecans (paw-khans, pee-can is something into which you piss) today. I don’t get much of the mustard seasoning and they’re definitely not spicy but that does not diminish how good they taste.
If you're into pizza, you definitely came to the right place. Peg's rendition comes with tons of gooey cheese and wonderfully fresh ingredients (in good abundance). I'm not huge into the crust; to me, dough only acts as the conduit to hold together ingredients. However, I've had many arguments where people swear that the crust makes the pizza (please). Regardless of how you feel, if you're a dough head, you'll love the made-from-scratch crust here. As you can obviously tell from the pic, this is no pre-fab slab. Cooked just perfectly, the crust tastes crusty on the bottom, while retaining the moisture within the dough.
As you can see, you cannot (should not) dine here without trying at least some of their delicious beer.
Peg Beer Co. is a great addition in an area that's about to explode with popularity. I love their concept here and I especially love everything that they put on my table. I look forward to a lot more visits to this downtown brew pub, exactly what this city needs.
