Sitting among the myriad of restaurants in the heart of Corydon, Market
Burger's small frontage makes it easy to get missed. If you travel Corydon to see and be seen,
this isn't the place for you as you won't be seen. In addition to the rustic dining room, they
offer cozy but elegant rooftop seating (the umbrellas are valued commodities on
hot, sunny days).
The limited menu presents a couple of chicken and vegetarian options
but this is a burger joint and burgers dominate the fare. Including the veggie and chicken burgers,
they offer 20 varieties, each stuffed with ingredients. I choose the Spicy Market Burger, which comes
with spicy Monterey Jack, chilli, onions, mustard, jalapeno, lettuce and spicy
mayo.
A lot of local Winnipeg burger joints love slapping chilli. As soon as you throw in chilli as an
ingredient, the sloppy factor immediately skyrockets. Although listed as a six-ounce patty, this
massive slab measures six inches diameter and one inch thick—I would guess this
patty to be minimum half-pound, perhaps 2/3 pound. Add a scoopful of chilli and we’re talking
about a pound of meat in this contraption!
There’s no shortage of vegetables either heap of lettuce covers the
other ingredients. Many people like a
huge sloppy burger but as a burger purist, there are too many ingredients
here. The individual flavours get lost
among the massive melange of ingredients.
The primary taste comes from the jalapenos, spicy but not
overwhelming. The remainder of the
sauces mix together into a goo that’s rather indiscernible. Don’t get me wrong—it tastes good, it’s just
a lot of flavours going on at once.
The patty tastes a tad overdone.
There are no juices running from the core but there’s still an element
of moisture here. The bun’s quite plain
and the lettuce sits on the precipice of wilty.
I order the side of fries with extra gravy and they don’t screw around
with the amount. The basket heaps with
fries, completely smothered with gravy.
The fresh cut, skin-on fries come well cooked, crispy on the outside and
moist on the inside. The gravy has good,
thick consistency but needs a bit of salt.
In addition to being tasty, this is a good dish that has great eye
appeal.
Market Burger doesn't offer much for a wine selection, specifically limited
to a red (merlot) and white (pinot grigio).
Their beer selection isn't extensive either, although they offer a
couple from local brewers Half Pints and Fort Garry. The cocktail board propounds the Whole 9
Caesar, which includes the regular vegetables but adds a slice of bacon, a cube
of cheese, and a burger (I kid you not) on a stick! It'd be fun to try but after my massive meal,
the last thing I need is a burger drink.
They server a lot of burgers here but not much else, but why do you
need to clutter your menu when you’ve mastered your specialty? The burgers taste delicious and the requisite
fries side stands on its own. The
ultra-friendly service completes the recipe for fine time and meal.
