Not so long ago, eating from the food court meant eating mass-produced, over-cooked, dried garbage. As a lunch/dinner break, going to the food court resulted from a forgotten brown bag, or not enough time for a full-serve meal.
Today, evolution of the picky eater elevates the quality of food court meals to new heights. As new players enter the field, many of them bring freshness, sophistication and inventiveness never before seen among fast food. With the emergence of new, good food, many of the existing guard find that they need to up their games to stay relevant. Don't get me wrong--there's still a lot of awful court food out there, but there's also a lot of top quality food to find.
Hawai'i Kai opened on the periphery of the City Place food court several months ago and it didn't take them long to amass a loyal following, myself among them. Although the gist of their operation focuses on fruit and veggie smoothies, as well as teas and juices, they offer a limited menu of eatables.

Please note, I took this picture shortly after they opened and now, they made a number of alterations (hand written over the menu board), and the green letter heading has mostly disappeared.
Hawai'i Kai serves two options for dining: the Poke Bowl and the Hawai'i Kai Salad. Essentially, many of the ingredients overlap on the two dishes. The main difference lies in the base of the dish, where the salad features vegetables and greens, and the Poke Bowl features rice--they now offer brown rice for an extra $0.50.
Although it appears that they loaded the salad up with dressing, it's not drenched and has just enough to moisten all the vegetables. The dressing has a mayonnaise base, blended with a Japanese barbecue sauce (think sauce used on eel in sushi). They blend the mixture into a stripped delivery.
