The heart of Falcon Lake at the shopping centre, Scotty's sells their own products as well as pies from Gondola Pizza. Located at the end of the mall, they're quite easy to miss, tucked away from The Nest, monstrous in comparison. If you can, try to catch it because they serve some darn good food here.
The fries come crispy and lightly salted. Thank you for leaving the skins on. Fries do not have a lot of nutritional value and most of it lies in the skin. Not greasy at all but not dry--if you like them a bit more moist, try the gravy, competent with nice flavour.
The chicken fingers have the same texture as the fries, light, crispy and not a hint of grease. Inside the crunchy batter, a generous morsel of white meat waits for you. I hate places that load up the batter and only give a sliver of meat--no worries here. The dip doesn't taste as sweet as the ubiquitous kind you find in jars, meaning it's likely made from scratch. It goes very well with the chicken; I would like to see more of the dip because it's tempting to dunk the thing right in.
If fries aren't your thing, try the tater tots. Not to sound repetetive but again, they come lightly fried, not greasy and crunch wonderfully. I like them dunked in gravy too.
Scotty's Burger comes with mustard, onion, pickles, lettuce, tomato, mayo, cheese and chilli--bascially a fat boy. The lettuce tastes crispy, although I would have plucked the edges that began to wilt. The big crosscut of pickle can be a bit overwhelming if you're not a pickle fan, but otherwise, it presents quite well. There's no shortage of cheese as it covers the entire bun, which itself is considerable in size.
The burger comes with a generous dollop of chilli, oozing with depth and flavour. I'm not a messy eater but if I dig into a chilli burger, I expect lots of stuff to fall out--and fall out it did. With all the goodness bursting out of this sandwich, I didn't pay enough attention to the bun. It tastes just fine but reviewing the photo, it looks like it might have some seeds in it. I'm very happy to see someone get away from the typical bleached white bread bun, and go with something a little more interesting and nutritious. Folks, this is a delicious burger.
After the burger, there's no room left to try the pizza. They offer pizza by the slice but you can only get the usual one-topping sampler, or the dreaded no-topping cheese pizza. I like my pizza with at very least, one meat and one vegetable and I wish they would have offered something with some toppings by the slice. The photos on their Facebook site sure look appetising.
Hidden at the back, you can easily miss Scotty's. The Nest's massive patio and restaurant dominates the building and anyone can easily overlook the small take-out window out towards the back. Don't miss it--there's good food to be had at Scotty's Drive-in. Now, time to jump in the lake to wash off all the burger goo off my face, hands, shirt, arms and legs.
