Way back when, Georges made some of the best burgers in the city. Over the past few years, I found them to be hit-and-miss. The last two times, I visited, it was almost awful. My burger was a smooshed and soggy mess. Honestly, it looked like someone took the sandwich, squashed it into a snowball, and wrapped it in foil.
Happily, today's burger looks much better than my previous encounters.
The Fatboy comes with the beef patty, cheese, chilli, mustard, onions and pickles. As per their menu, "all burgers are served on a bakery style bun." It's just my opinion, but I've never been a fan of their buns--there's just too much bread and bread is (here comes the flack) boring, dull and tasteless. The oversized bun is not only thick, it's also wide, and envelopes the ingredients on all sides.
Beneath the bun, you find lots of goop and lettuce, normally inherent to fatboys. The shredded lettuce here looks a bit past it's best-before date, starting to brown on the edges. Tomato slices are also supposed to be inherent to fatboys, but they seemed to have forgotten it. There isn't very much chilli, and even less on the taste. They also forgot the cheese on my Fatboy. A great fatboy is supposed to cause an ooey-gooey mess, as it melts all over your hands. This one does that, but still, every bite is dominated by too much bread.
The restaurant's name is Georges (sic) Burgers and Subs, so naturally, I'll try the sub as well. The Combo Sub comes with spiced ham, salami, ham, lettuce, tomato, cheese, onions, mustard, may and sub sauce.
There's a good amount of meat and vegetables here. The lettuce looks somewhat fresh, considerably fresher than what was on the burger. Again, I find there's too much bread, which overwhelms the taste and texture of the sandwich. The sub is supposed to come with mustard, mayo and sub sauce (whatever that is) but this sub tastes dry to me. In fact, I even squirt a generous amount of my own mustard-mayo sauce onto it, and it still tastes dry. That's due to a combination of the volume of bread, in addition to the paucity of their sauce to begin with.
Tip: just have a Dagwood Sub from Sobeys or a Lumberjack from Safeway - they're much, much better.
Still on the topic of sauce, there's no shortage of sauce on the Gyro.
Lots of meat, slathered in tzatziki sauce and lots of vegetables is what makes a great Gyro, and this one tastes great. The beef tastes a tad dry but enough tzatziki takes care of the dryness. Even trying to hold it all in, look at the fall out after I finish the Gyro.
As you can see, the tomatoes look beautifully red, the onions taste crisp, but alas, the brown lettuce makes a return.
The fries come in a brown paper bag, and by the time I open the bag, the grease has completely soaked through. The entire bag, from bottom to top, is a greasy mess. In fact, there's so much fat, it started to soak through the outer bag.
The photo does more justice to the fries than they deserve. Here, they look almost crispy but don't let looks fool you, every fry is a soggy fry. I know it's deep fried, but I don't want to eat the vat of oil it was cooked in.
Add some gravy and it instantly looks better--at least now it's supposed to look soggy. The gravy has nice consistency and flavour. Unlike some places, the side of gravy comes in a fair-sized container, holding at least a half-cup of the sauce.
Best burger in the city? Not even close. It's hit-and-miss, and even the dishes on the menu are hit-and-miss. With all the genuinely great burger places out there now, I just as soon miss Georges Burgers & Subs.
