India Palace
July 2017
India Palace has always been one of my favourite places to eat during Fringe season. They always serve exceptional food at excellent prices. They offer several different kinds of curries and the chicken has lots of meat to accompany the excellent sauce.
All curries come on basmati rice and the rice alone tastes good enough to eat by itself. Every time I’ve had it (which is a lot of times), the rice comes al dente, golden with spices, and rich with butter. If all the sauces weren’t so good, I’d gladly eat the rice solo.
Finally, there’s the crowd favourite butter chicken, which comes with the rice as well. There are heaping chunks of chicken swimming in the rich butter sauce. The sauce here looks quite red and tastes more tomatoey than most butter chicken sauces I’ve tasted, and there’s nothing wrong with that. I very wise man once told me:
There’s nothing better than butter chicken—and he’s right.

Hi Ray
ReplyDeleteJust to clarify your 'unbiased' reviews claim. If you receive compensation from sites like Zomato (tripadvisor, chowhound etc) who live off fees taken from places like India Palace, does that not mean you are indirectly supporting / being biased by the fact that the business being reviewed on Zomato gets good reviews for paying Zomato?
Steve
Although I place the Zomato gadget after the review, Zomato does not pay me anything.
DeleteOver the past ten years I've been to India Palace several times due to high ratings by individuals on food sites. Each time I've gone for lunch and have found the food to be pretty unflavourful, not uninspiring. Not significantly better than the other Indian food places. In fact a few in the city are better. Best in Winnipeg doesn't necessarily mean its good, if compared to other Indian food eateries in Canada. For instance Ottawa has a few very fine ones in my opinion far above what we receive here in Winnipeg.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree certainly. I can think of a lot of cities that serve better Indian food than what we have here.
ReplyDeleteTo clarify, this review refers only to the food truck run by India Palace. Among the food truck choices (especially at Fringe), Indian Palace is one of my favourites. As far as the actual restaurant goes, I'm on board that the food tastes good but not great.
